Volunteer Training
Mohave County Office of Emergency Management delivers the FEMA Community Emergency Response Team curriculum to residents of Mohave County. New volunteers complete a 20-hour basic course covering disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, and team organization. Training is free.
Courses are offered once or twice per year, depending on needs. Class size is limited to 24 students.
The 20-Hour Basic Course

01
Unit 1 — Disaster Preparedness
Hazards facing Mohave County: wildfire, monsoon flooding, extreme heat, earthquake, and utility failure. How to assess your home and plan for 72 hours of self-sufficiency.

Unit 2 — Fire Safety & Utility Control
Fire chemistry, suppression with a fire extinguisher, and safely shutting off gas, water, and electricity at the residential level.

Unit 3 — Disaster Medical Operations I
Treating life-threatening conditions: airway, bleeding, and shock. Disaster triage (START method).

Unit 4 — Disaster Medical Operations II
Head-to-toe assessments, treating common disaster injuries, and establishing a medical treatment area.

Unit 5 — Light Search & Rescue
Sizing up a damaged structure, safe entry, victim rescue carries, and rescuer safety.

Unit 6 — Team Organization & Disaster Psychology
CERT organization in the field, documentation, and supporting survivors (and yourself) emotionally.

Unit 7 — Final Field Exercise
Saturday simulation: search and rescue, triage, and treatment drill at the Kingman Fire Department training grounds.
Continuing Education
Active members are expected to attend monthly meetings and complete refresher drills each year. Optional advanced training sessions in HAM radio operations, traffic & crowd management, and shelter operations are available through partner organizations.
